Teaching

He starts from the simple experience of being aware. Thoughts, feelings and perceptions come and go, but awareness is always present; he holds that peace and happiness are its nature. In his teaching the body, mind and world are then explored as appearances in, and finally of, this awareness. 2, 4, 5

Who it is for

For people who want a calm, carefully argued way into non-dual understanding through their own experience and meditation, and who are at ease with long, reflective talks.

Life and places
  • Soon after first reading Rumi in 1975, at fifteen, he met his first teacher, Dr Francis Roles, at Colet House in London. 1
  • In 1977 he enrolled in the ceramics department of West Surrey College of Art and Design, and in 1980 he moved to Wenford Bridge in Cornwall, where he lived and worked with the potter Michael Cardew. 1
  • He opened his own studio in 1983. 1
  • He lives in Devon, UK, and holds regular retreats in the UK, the US and Italy, as well as online. 1

Where to start

  • The essay The Pathless Path of Simply Being (2024) on his website is a short, free introduction to how he sees the progressive path, the direct path and simply being. His website describes You Are the Happiness You Seek (2022) as a book for anyone who wants lasting happiness. 3, 4
Public context
  • He was a potter for about thirty years and spent twelve years with his teacher Francis Lucille. 1
