Teaching

Jack Kornfield teaches Buddhist mindfulness and insight meditation from the Theravada tradition, in which he trained as a monk in Thailand, India and Burma. His books present Buddhist psychology and the view that awakening can be found right where we are, in our relationships, our family life and our service to others. 1, 5, 12, 13

Who it is for

For readers and meditators who want an introduction in plain language to Buddhist mindfulness practice and its teachings on the heart, with a view to daily life. He is a Buddhist teacher, not an Advaita teacher.

Life and places
  • Born in 1945, he graduated from Dartmouth College in Asian Studies in 1967 and joined the Peace Corps, working on tropical medicine teams in the Mekong River valley. 1, 4
  • He trained as a Buddhist monk in Thailand, India and Burma, under Ajahn Chah, as one of the first Western monks at Wat Pah Pong by 1969, and under Mahasi Sayadaw. 1, 4, 5
  • He has taught meditation since 1974; with Sharon Salzberg and Joseph Goldstein he co-founded the Insight Meditation Society, which opened in Barre, Massachusetts, in 1976, and he later co-founded Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, California. 1, 2, 3, 4
  • He holds a PhD in clinical psychology and teaches at Spirit Rock as a residential retreat teacher. 1, 2

Where to start

  • A Path with Heart (1993), his guide through the perils and promises of spiritual life; his website publishes excerpts from it, such as the meditation instructions on naming. 6, 11
  • The Wise Heart (2008), his guide to the teachings of Buddhist psychology; excerpts are on his website. 7, 12
  • His podcast Heart Wisdom, free on his website since 2014, with his talks and guided meditations. 8, 9, 10
Public context
  • According to Spirit Rock, Mahasi Sayadaw gave teaching authorisation to him and three other American students in a ceremony at the Insight Meditation Society in 1979. 4, 5
  • Spirit Rock traces its practice to two lineages: the Burmese insight meditation of Mahasi Sayadaw and the Thai forest tradition of Ajahn Chah, whom it calls Kornfield's root teacher. 5
